The
years that I spent in Fife and Drum were one of the most beneficial
experiences I had growing up. Not only did I make a lot of rockin'
friends within the group, but it also taught me some very important
life skills. During my time in the corps I had the opportunity
to lead the drum section as the head drummer. For me, that responsibility
served as a catalyst for leadership growth. Also, I learned the
value that history has in our modern culture. History is NOT just
an interesting story about a bunch of funny dressed people fighting
wars and struggling to survive without all of our modern comforts!
It is the foundation for our way of life now. F & D makes
a point of explaining to the participants the reasons and the
traditions behind items many of us would have taken for granted.
Now that I have graduated from the corps, I use my leadership
skills nearly every day in a variety of situations from my job
to group assignments in school. The history that I learned continues
to give me an appreciation for how our country was founded and
my heritage as an American. And hey! I got to learn the drum as
well. --Jon Fox
